My Little Girl! Eight Today!
And how the years are slipping away,
Always so many things to do
Never much time for just we two
Gone are nappies, lips on breast
Sucking need, once all, now less
The length of you! All legs and arms,
those artful poses, subtle charms
A studied indifference upon your face
Embarrassment when we embrace
Changing as I watch you grow
Becoming someone I don't know.
Precious child, we have eight more
Before your life is yours to draw
Before the wildness calls you in
And I must watch you sink or swim,
So pencil in some time for me
Before I have to set you free
Come and see the world I know,
Learn the things that I can show
Take time to hug and time to hold
Before maturity makes you bold
Before you lose all your respect
For the generation I reflect
For change is coming, you will see
When we'll forget how to be,
Just us alone against the world
Mother and child, woman and girl
Strong together, lost apart
Building love inside our hearts.
One day you'll see me through new eyes
Someone you wish to despise
Fight against me, push me away
It doesn't have to be today
You still have time to be a child
So listen up, just for a while
I have such things I want to say
To show you, if I can, the way
to see the world in golden shades
To never lose your chosen way
To stay safe when others are at risk
To know how to love and who to kiss
I want to share my dreams with you
To show you a person you never knew
Talk about things that matter to me
Poverty, misery, crime,war and liberty
I want a chance to be myself
Before you stash me on the shelf
So Happy Birthday, Eight Today
Don't let the good times slip away,
Eight years gone, eight more to come
Before these special times are done
Don't race to be too old, too soon
Please, hold, don't burst, your birthday balloon.
